Coming out of a steep curve we saw
three cars parked sloppily on the road. An accident? No, a group of
about 15 coatis (no, we didn't recognize them but had to look them up
in the guidebook later in the evening) hanging out on the road, with
their curious snouts sniffing the air for food and their striped
tails standing up like flagpoles.
We joined the group of ecstatic
tourists snapping photos of these attractive small creatures, and
realized that we had certainly heard the squeaking sounds they were
making but confused them for birds. Just like sloths, they had
probably been around us all the time, but hiding in the dense jungle.
We pedaled onwards, happy about meeting
yet another exciting animal, but seriously concerned about their
well-being. Was this a spot where people regularly stopped to feed
them? How many of them were being killed by cars or harmed by eating
human food? Or could it just be a coincidence that they had been
crossing the road today? There's no way of knowing, but we're really
happy that we're back on our bikes, being able to spot animals on
time to avoid crushing them with our wheels.
