Where lizards grow on trees

We have always had one principle on our bike trips: no detours. No matter how great someone will say a sight is, and how close it is to the main road, it very seldom is worth the detour on a bike. A good example of this were the Kivatsu waterfalls that we saw in the summer in Russia: a nice small waterfall, but in no way worth the 16-kilometer detour that took us nearly an hour to cycle on a narrow sand road.

But when Kelly, the owner of Essence Arenal, our new favorite hostel in El Castillo, told us this morning about a small iguana sanctuary only about 1,5 kilometers from the main road in Muelle San Carlos we decided to break our own rules once more and do a detour. And boy, was this the best detour ever!

This lizard hotspot is situated North of the big intersection in Muelle San Carlos. Right next to a bridge lies a touristy shop and restaurant with a lizard theme, and outside these amazing creatures were just enjoying the sun and our attention. One of the big lizards showed a great interest in Lina's trailer sniffing and even licking it – maybe he was considering a doing cycling trip of his own?
