Answer: A baby sloth. As I mentioned
yesterday, we managed to see two sloths sleeping in a tree almost
next to our cabin. We also heard that there was an orphaned 6-week
old sloth living almost next door, and were just dying to see it. But
how to approach the retired German lady caring for the sloth in her
own home? We didn't want to be rude and intruding, but we just had to
get a look.
The problem was solved when Lina got a
glimpse of the lady sitting on her porch, and boldly marched to her
and asked if she would be so kind and show us her hairy companion.
She quite happily agreed, and we were allowed to tiptoe into her
living room where a baby sloth was indeed sleeping in a large crib.
This already fulfilled our wildest
dreams: a live sloth snoozing just half a meter away! But the woman
seemed to somehow like us, and said that if we got up early enough in
the morning we could see her take the sloth out to the garden. We
agreed to meet at 6 AM to see the creature awake.
It gets light just a few minutes to six
here, and as we peeked out from the cabin we saw that she was already
out in the garden. What else can I say? Just look at the photos and
see that pink nose (snout?), the long nails and the fluffy fur. As
they say in the Lonely Planet book: it's an irrefutable fact that
there's nothing cuter than a baby sloth.
